Just announced at CES, the Vive Tracker works much in the same ways its sister headset and controllers do. The Vive's "lighthouses"—small black boxes that you position at opposite corners of your VR space—spit out constant waves of light in the non-visible spectrum, while the controller's and headset's sensors make use of these invisible waves to calculate their position in the room. The Vive Tracker, slightly larger than a hockey puck at four inches in diameter, has these same sensors. So when you put the Tracker on some physical object, the computer that's running your game or simulation can see where it is.
What will this be used for? It's up to developers to figure it out. So far third-party developers have started experimenting with using it to make VR-capable rifles as controllers for virtual reality shooting games, and real-life cameras that players can see and manipulate without ever leaving VR. Who knows what the breakout application might ultimately be, but this will almost certainly be an extremely useful tool in helping make virtual reality feel more real than it ever has before.
